Golf courses are everywhere in Hawaii. The islands offer eighty courses that are hard to resist. Sun, sand, mountains, volcanoes,ocean surf, balmy breezes and valleys beckon–and with the added attraction of some of the top courses in the world, this is a vacationer’s dream.
Hawaii has so many courses that you could play a different one every day, for nearly three months! Granted, you’d be tired and a bit sunburned, but you’d never play the same course twice.
Courses in Hawaii run the gamut, from county-operated courses with modest fees, to some of the top-rated courses in the USA. There are few other places in the world where you get a course made of lava fields, with crashing surf, drop-dead beautiful scenery, whales, dolphins, and volcanoes nearby.
The best times to golf in Hawaii? Come anytime! There’s no special season set aside.
Big Island
The Big Island, has seventeen courses. Here you’ll find some great challenges and spectacular scenery. Mauna Kea’s course will NEVER disapoint. The same can be said of Hapuna and Waikoloa. Many courses are tied to exclusive resorts and prices can be steep. For instance, at the Orchid At Mauna Lani, which features a 36-hole championship course, green fees run $185, with seasonal specials available on certain dates. But it is also possible to play the 9-hole Hamakua Country Club course for only $15.
Maui
Be sure to check out any of the three championship courses at the famous Kapalua Resort, on Maui. Two other best bets are Kaanapali and Wailea. Afternoon wind in some areas makes it difficult to play, so late afternoon tee times are heavily discounted.

Kauai
On Kauai, major tournaments are hosted at the Princeville Resort courses and at Po’ipu Bay Resort. All other courses on the island are excellent, but the Princeville always gets top ratings in Golf Digest. This spectacular course is set against scenic Hanalei Bay.
You can also check out the Kauai Marriott Resort & Beach Club, in Lihue. The resort is right next to the Kauai Lagoons Golf & Racquet Club, which has two Jack Nicklaus-designed courses. Check Kauai
Oahu
Oahu offers a few dozen private and resort courses to choose from, in addition to some county-operated courses. If you’re looking for some real challenge, try the Koolau. It is rated the number one course on Oahu by Golf Digest.
One of the most beautiful courses is the Hawaii Prince Golf Club, on Waikiki Beach. The adjacent hotel owns and operates this 27-hole championship course designed by legends Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay. The 9-hole layouts offer a variety of playing experiences, no matter your skill level. The course covers more than 270 acres with magnificent views of the nearby Waianae Mountains. There are an abundance of world-class courses to choose from — some are exclusive, however, and require either membership or a sponsor. But with public courses around, it is still possible to enjoy a round of golf for a smaller fee.
There’s plenty of good golfing here to suit anyone’s style, skill level, and accommodation preferences. In fact, there are so many options from which to choose, you can surely find one that will suit you — to a tee!
