Hawaii is a chain of islands surrounded by inlets, bays, atolls, beauty, underwater life, fish, anemones, sunshine, white sand, and the bluest water you will ever see. If you have ever kayaked you know how intimate kayaking is with the water. It feels as if you and the water are one except that you are comfortably tucked into your kayak and leisurely dipping your paddle and moving at your own chosen speed along the edge where land meets sea. There is so much beauty to be seen from the kayak perspective that it is impossible to pick out one kayaking tour to take. So here is a list of perfect spots to start with. They are presented in no particular order. All of these choices are equally exquisite.

Kauai is a top notch kayaking island well known for its rich range of rivers and streams, rainforest scenery, exotic animals, bottle-nose dolphins and aquatic birds. Around Hanalei Bay is the best place to see wildlife. Wailua River on Kauai is the only kayakable river in Hawaii. Just a side note about Hawaiian birds, here is a partial list:

Ducks, geese, swans, partridges, grouse, turkeys, old world quail, new world quail, loons, grebes, albatrosses, shearwaters petrels, storm-petrels, boobies gannets, cormorants, frigate birds, bitterns, herons, egrets, ibises, spoonbills, hawks, kites, eagles, caracaras, falcons, cranes, rails, gallinules, coots, pipers, curlews, godwits, snipes, phalaropes, gulls, terns, auks, puffins, skuas, stilts avocets, lapwings plovers, pigeons doves, lories, parakeets, macaws, parrots, cuckoos, roadrunners, anis, barn owls, typical owls, nightjars, swifts, and kingfishers. These are just the non-perching birds which are the ones most likely to be seen from a kayak. Of course you have to be close to land to see some of them.

If you are a new kayaker, along Oahu’s east coast the water is very calm. You can take it slow and easy here. There are numerous small islands and you can stop at any of them to soak up the sun.

Maui is another glorious kayaking choice. This is where the Honolulu Bay marine preserve is. If you like calm kayaking, this is a good place to be and if you want a kayaking challenge, check out the island of Molokai where the waters are choppier. This is due to the ocean swells and 10-mph winds. For a real challenge kayak along the wild north shore of Molokai. This is not a place for beginners but it is magnificent.
