Submarines and Glassbottom Boats

Latest Reviews

Before mentioning any places to go touring via submarines and glassbottom boat, let’s take a moment to consider what you might see under the sea. The Hawaiian archipelago has a perfect climate for astounding marine life. The waters are warm and deep an the islands are relatively isolated. The pristine waters surrounding not only have hundreds of species of marine life, almost one-third of the fish are only found in Hawaiian waters. That’s a lot of fish since there are 566 shore fish species in Hawaii. That is just the little fish. There are some huge creatures in the area too. They include dolphins, humpback whales, sperm whales, pilot whales, sharks, manta rays, turtles and monk seals. These are best seen from inside a submarine or glassbottom boat.

Just in case you feel up to swimming or snorkeling among the big mammals and fish, remember that there is also a lot of venomous marine life. A sea urchin has spines that can snap off in your flesh and be very painful. The Portuguese man of war can sting you with long tentacles – and I mean long. They can be more than 150 feet long. The crown of thorns is extremely painful to the point of making you vomit due to the venom on their spines. And these are just some of the painful creatures best seen through glass. It’s part of mother nature’s sense of humor perhaps but even the most poisonous creature has a serene beauty to it. The underground life also needs to be protected from you. The gorgeous Hawaiian corals are easily damaged by humans and people are advised not to touch them.

There is so much more than fish and mammals underwater in Hawaii. There is marine flora, shipwrecks, and caves. There are several tours companies that provide submarines and glassbottom boat tours. On the Big Island, there are several highly recommended companies such as the Kailua Bay Charter Company, Blue Sea Cruises and Atlantis Submarine Hawaii. On Maui, there is Reef Dancer and Atlantis Submarine Hawaii which also has a site on Oahu. Looking at the underwater world through a glass bottomed boat has a magical, mystical, almost otherworldly feel to it. What makes it so very special is that you will see things here that you will see no where else in the world.
