There is one aspect of water skiing and wakeboarding that you don’t need to be convinced about – Hawaii is one of the world’s finest geographic locations for these activities. Wakeboarding is relatively new – it’s only been around since 1985 when a surfer drilled holes in his surf board and added straps for his feet. This was a combination of a skateboard and a surf board and was referred to as a skurfer.
What it has in common with water skiing is that the wake board is attached to the back of a boat and you are basically surfing in the boat’s wake. If you ever skateboarded, surfed or snowboarded, you will love wake boarding. Hop on, get cabled to a boat and start speeding around in the water at up to 24 mph. There’s nothing like it. Wakeboards come in different sizes and shapes. Some boards have channels in the bottom and this lets you ridge higher in the water.
If you have already gone water skiing, you might like to try that first before jumping into wave boarding. Water skis come in a variety of styles too. Usually they are made of fiberglass or a combination of fiberglass and graphite. If you are experienced, then you likely use slalom skis. If you are new and are renting skies, the guide will advise you and that advice will likely be to rent a combination ski.
Regardless of which traveling on water method you want to use, there are many water ski/wave board locations in Hawaii. One example is the Hawaii Water Sports Center in Koko Marina, just minutes from Hanauma Bay. The center uses Nautiques for these water sports. If you are new to the sports, the instructors will provide a lesson before taking you out.
Another company is the Kauai Water Ski and Surf Co. on Kauai. The ultimate water skiing experience is supposed to be on Kauai’s Wailua River. This company provides wakeboarding as well. Not only is this a protected area for water sports, the fresh water skiing is glassy and includes a professional driver and instructor, a tournament ski boat and quality equipment. You can rent the boat by the half hour. The number of people and the length of time each one wants to ski or wakeboard determine the amount of time that you want to spend on the water.
